Field Sites

The Climate Impacts Research Centre and our collaborators maintain several long-term research study sites here in the Arctic. These range from sites along nearby mountains, in regions of permafrost and in world-famous mires. Each offers researchers different opportunities for data collection and natural Arctic environments in which to conduct their fieldwork, and has access to a range of different specialist instruments and varied infrastructure. Here we provide information about each of our long-term research study sites for you to establish which is best suited to your project.

Stordalen

A world-famous research site based at a network of permafrost thaw ponds and mires just a few kilometres away from the station.

Nuolja

Mount Nuolja overlooks Abisko and features a 100-year old ecological transect for a century of phenology data.

Storflaket

A permafrost peatland mire, easily accessible from the station. Here 50-90 cm of peat is underlain by silty sediments.

Miellajokka

The Miellejokka field site spans a river gradient, stretching from headwater to outlet.
