About This Field Site

The Miellajokka catchment (53.5 km2 ) is located near Abisko and drains into Lake Torneträsk. The research associated with the site is focused on biogeochemical processes in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with special emphasis climate change effects in arctic environments.

The catchment is oriented north-south and can be considered moderately to steeply sloped. It is defined by four large streams which flow northward. The total length of the stream network is 44.6 km and includes first to fourth Strahler order streams. There are two lakes in the catchment, covering in total 0.69 km2.

Land cover of the mire changes with elevation, from mostly bare rock above 1200 m above sea level, to tundra vegetation between 700 and 1200 m, to sparse cover by mountain birch (Betula pubescens spp. Czerepanovii) and treeless tundra heath below the treeline at 700 m.

Soil permafrost in this region is discontinuous at higher elevations and sporadic at low elevation areas.
